Chat rooms and forums

When I try to tell people at school what a forum is, they go like, "Oh. You mean like a chat room?"
... Now they confused me. What's the difference between a chat room and a forum place?

my guess would be that in a chat room you have direct contact with other people but in a forum you have indirect contact with other people.
