Mining?

Hi there, sorry for the newbie question, I looked through the manual and stuff - I notice people discussing mining. How do I go about starting that? Do I need an item, where would I find that? Thank you.

I think you get the mining kit on the island on Tuesday, I think Rovark gives it to you. And once you got it, you can mine in most caves once every hour.
