How do i switch records?

I been playign pokemon emerald and other pokemon games and i have heard alot about switching records with a friend. BUt ho do you do such a thing?and what do you need to do it?

When you go to link up there are three options: battle, trade and swap records. Select swap records. To do it you need two GBA PokÃƒÂ©mon games and a GBA link cable. I don't think you have to reach any point in the games to unlock it.
