just think about it... whenever you run into a wild pokemon, you would probably be stronger than it.

well then i guess it's just me. maybe it should be the opposite, like it only works on trainers.

That would not be real. In the real RPG's, they do have super effective attacks on both trainers and wild Pokemon.
