White turnips are usually bought in bulk. They don't need to be planted either. Red turnips, however, can only be bought once per week. They need to be planted in order to make profit.
How do I make a profit off of white turnips?
You sell them to nook. Just like any other item.

Well, it's more complicated then that. They will rot if they aren't sold by the end of the week. Rotten turnips are useless. (except for the fact that they will attact ants and flies!) They will also rot if you TT (time travel). Even then it'll still be hard to make a profit. Nook won't sell them at the same price all the time. There are two prices everyday 8:00A.M.-noon and noon-11:00P.M. A strategy most sellers use is to wait for a spike.
Spike?
Yup, a spike is when Nook will buy your turnips for outrageously high prices. Note: A spike is impossible if you TT. This does not include small TT's for time changes ect.
What are red turnips good for?
Red turnips can be sold to Nook just like white turnips but, first you have to plant them and grow them. If you don't water them everyday, them will go bad. So, if you aren't sure if you will be able to visit your town tommorrow, it would be a good idea to pull them up (to take a planted red turnip put of the ground, you have to dig it up with your shovel!) because it better to get little profit than no profit.
Here's how much Nook will pay for each day you water them:
0 days – 2 bells
1 day – 100 bells
2 days – 500 bells
3 days – 2,000 bells
4 days – 4,000 bells
5 days – 8,000 bells
6 days – 16,000 bells
16,000 is the maximum.
What's this turnip glitch I keep hearing about?
If you place turnips on a table they never rot! To put them on a table, you have to put an item on the floor beside the table first. Then if you try to put the turnip on the ground, it goes on the table. You can keep them there for as long as you like!
