I've now had recommendations to get this get from two of my good friends.

And, it's not as though I don't trust their judgment on games, but I'm still not quite sure. I read Gamespot's review, and the battle systems seems to be based on movement with the stylus, and this worries me.

My DS is old, and the touch screen does not sense the stylus properly.
. .
For example, if a were to tap where the above green dot is with my stylus, the DS would 'sense' the tap as though I were tapping at the location of the red dot.

I want to know if this would hinder gameplay, and, if so, would it be worth the trouble to save up for a new DS Lite?

I haven't got the game myself so I can't answer your question, but I know some people that own it and they can't stop raving about it; it's meant to be a fantastic game and your friends are certainly not alone in their opinion of it.
