Psychic type. It has very few resistances and can counter its own type with Shadow Ball. Dark types are a bit of a hinderance, but psychics can learn a few attacks to counter that. Not to mention the attack Psychic is one of the most powerful attacks in the game when all factors are considered.
What type do you think is the best overall?

Steel and dragon.
Steel types are based around defense, not to mention most types aren't very effective against them.
Dragon Pokemon get a few extra resistances and have some powerful attacks.

Re: The top type
Never really thought of it.
Overall, I personally think Dark types, but that's purely on opinions, and no research done in it.
My main thought? They all have something that they are weak against, and better than. There are several in each that seem to learn some 'loophole' attack in each field, too, usually. So, it makes for one complex system, overall. Basically, in a way they're all set up with no one as the "ultimate victor". Psychic's may at least appear the 'best', on this, if they aren't, because of their lacking seeming resistance. Dragons can had the same thing said about them. I know I always got more [*]upset[*] when I had to deal with a DRAGON specialty GYM leader, rather than a Psychic one. xD. The Psychic ones were pretty much a tedious walk-through task.

Re: The top type
I adore psychic-type too zen, but dark-types completely obliterate them. Very few psychic types have access to bug and fighting-type moves, which are the dark's only [if I recall correctly] weaknesses. In the first generation, psychic was definitely much better off, but the second generation brought dark and steel-types which almost completely ruined them [not to mentioned they're super effectiveness against only poison and fighting-types isn't that helpful]. Re: The top type
I suppose the reason I still consider Psychic types to be above Dark types is because my level 100 Espeon was able to learn Hidden Power [Fighting], thereby covering all its weaknesses. I agree, though. Dark types are not to be counted out.
