Okay, to mine stuff. First you need a mining kit. You get this from the place you can go on Tuesdays from the Harbor, I don't remember exactly how you get the ticket. Either you buy it from the trick house shop or get it from one of the professors after filling certain requirements.

I don't remember any requirements to get the initial mining kit, but after you get it you can mine in the caves on the site.
