A little help here

Okay i have my account and my starter i really don't know what to do now. I battled some trainers and 1 gym. Then i went exploring and found the i can't go beond GoldenRod So do i just battle all the gyms or something?

I dont know I f u have this but if u scroll up to the description of goldenrod it says route 40
