Caterpie/Venonat

Post by Pikachu3828 »

Here's something I've always suspected since I was a child...were the Caterpie/Venonat evolutionary lines mixed up at some point during development, either purposely or unintentionally?

Here's how it looks now:

The Caterpie-Venomoth evolution isn't so compelling, the really interesting part is the Venomoth-Butterfree one. Look how similar the two Pokémon are - matching eyes, mouth, teeth and antennae. Both moths and butterflies metamorphose from caterpillars into cocoons so it really makes no less sense for Butterfree to come from Venonat than Venomoth.

Butterfree does look like a butterfly and the name does come from butterfly but here's the kicker - Venomoth's Japanese name is Morphon, from the Morpho butterfly. Seems the only reason we consider Venomoth a moth is due to its name. So what do you think - were these the original evolutionary stages that got mixed up at one point?
