well since they werent introduced untill the gold and silver generation, you cant really go much further back than that can you...
I've only ever seen one, and as i have bitterly recalled once or twice on this site, it did not end well (and i will forever hate the move 'self destruct'
Oh i've also seen the red gyarados in lae rage in G/S/C but that doesnt count since its part of the story and you HAVE to see it

I caught a shiny Magikarp in FireRed and in Pearl. It was strange. I also caught a shiny Gastly in the Old Chateau.
In G/S/C, if a Pokemon had an IV of 10 in every stat, it was shiny. So the first shinies were actually bad in competitive play.

Not True. While Shiny's had set IV's, Shiny Pokémon in G/S/C had higher than average IVs/stats that made them stronger that normal Pokemon. But with the Set IV's being similer across all of them ment that they were unable to breed with each other, due to compatability being worked out on IVs.

Are you sure? Everything I've heard said that the Jhoto shinies had IVs of 10... What's your source(s)?

<offtopic>Wikipedia sucks at Pokemon information, apparently some guy decided an article on each Pokemon wasn't notable enough and only kept Pikachu.</offtopic>
Anyways...
I have never seen a shiny Pokemon on my games, nor have I caught one. I have seen one on my friends, but considering he owns an AR, I'd say it would be hacked.

Ya, Wikipedia doesn't have a very good Pokemon database, but Bulbapedia rivals Serebii's.

I've only caught a Golbat I got from Sapphire, which I then brought over to my Diamond and evolved into Crobat.

Shinies, eh? I seem to have some luck catching them, comparing to people I know, anyway. =P On Pokémon Pearl I have a shiny Rhydon, and on Sapphire, I have a shiny Spinda and a shiny Flygon. ^^
