Special report of something weird hapening in August 27!!

I just checked acording to the NASA that the Planet Mars is going to be visible about the same size of the moon in August, 27 2009 at night.
This is very amazing since this only happens every 287 years!

Why would a planet that's about 100 million km away from the Earth be the same size as the moon? Unless Mars happens to be 600000 km away from the Earth (twice the distance of the moon, twice the size of the moon), it would not be as big as the moon and it will never be.

that big flashing light looks more annoying to me - but besides my point...

Of course its false - If mars was that close to the earth we'd all be dead soon. The closest Mars has ever been to the earth was back in 2003, and even then it just looked like a big star in the sky...

I think people have misread the first post. It was stated Mars is going to visibly be the same size as the Moon, not physically become the same size. The latter is impossible while the former can happen due to orbit positions and perspective.

except it cant - reread MY post to see that the closet it has ever been (and will be for a long time again) and it was not much bigger than a star in the sky... where as the moon can look a LOT bigger than a star...

So unless someone's going to put a giant telescopic lens in space to make the optical illusion... not possble

I should have read up a little on this before I posted first rather than giving the topic creator the benefit of the doubt.

A quick Google search reveals this to be a hoax so I'm locking this topic.
