I did reasearch on it, and most of my results point to Giovanni as his father. My other results point to Prof. Oak.

I don't think Prof. Oak could be Ash's dad... Too old. (Maybe perhaps grandfathero or something, but then that'd mean Gary and Ash would be related...) And Giovanni is just not right. In Mewtwo Returns... (or was it Mewtwo strikes back?) The two (Ash and Giovanni) showed no signs of knowing each other.

That actually makes sense...There had to be a reason the top 3 people showed up as 3 big shadow people instead of color.
