I have 2 questions about pokeballs...
1. What is it like inside one of these orbs?
2. How can pokemon trainers tell which pokeball contains which pokemon?

It's like a fake world and they are psychic.

I think that maybe it is a type of suspended animation where the data is compressed, yet they are fully aware of the world around them. And the Trainers just remember the order. I remember hearing about one guy in the show who had to use stickers to remember.

No actually it might not show in the Tv Show or the Game but if you read the comics, trainers know which pokeball contains which pokemon by looking through the red part of the pokeball.

I thought that the trainers had a really good memory or just guessed and got lucky.

I think inside the pokeball is a little house for your pokemon.

I think the rest part is an accelerated matter repair chamber that normalizes their vitals. Simply put, it heals them at a faster rate than sleep.
